Wenge, originating from Africa, is an exotic wood that boasts a unique, striking appearance. The colour is akin to that of a roasted coffee bean — wild and dark. Its captivating, deep, rich tones are intensified in low-light settings, like alongside a night sky. With exposure to sunlight, it lightens and softens slightly over time, in a manner that only means it gets better with age.
The inviting and warm nature of Wenge veneer makes it a popular choice for adding a touch of sophistication and luxury to any space. Our 10mm sheets are great for lining walls and ceilings, whereas our 19mm sheets are often used for high-quality furniture and cabinetry.
Our Wenge veneers are crown cut, which honours and showcases the tree’s complex, natural grains. Durable and strong, Wenge veneers don’t mark, scratch, or damage easily, making them incredibly hard-wearing — especially when they’re attached to our premium birchwood cores.
Why is Makers’ply so special?
Our birch plywood offers superior performance and aesthetic appeal. It’s sought-after for its strength, durability, resistance to warping, splitting, and absence of gaps. Other commonly used plywood species like pine, eucalyptus and poplar may be cheaper, but they have a lower-density which leaves you with a soft material that's vulnerable to all of the above.
When it comes to plywood, no other species make the cut. Birch ply, on the other hand, cuts beautifully, with any exposed core actually acting as an asset to be celebrated, rather than an imperfection you’d want to hide.

Using natural veneer finishes to your advantage
Natural wooden veneers, like Kauri, Wenge and Walnut, are a great asset to our birchwood ply, providing both visual and functional benefits. When used in architecture, they can add warmth and texture to any space, creating a natural, organic look and feel.
Our natural veneers have a unique grain pattern that is determined by the type of wood used, the cutting method, and the way the veneer is sliced.
What your purchase and delivery process might look like
Your birchwood ply sheets will be treated with the utmost care and attention to ensure their pristine condition, from their arrival at our local Cambridge Warehouse, right up until they are delivered to you safely in their protective packets.
On average, pre-orders take between 16-20 weeks to make their way to you. However, our delivery process can be tailored around your unique timeline, as part of our personalised approach. Depending on stock availability, pack and sheet orders can be picked up within 2-4 days.
For your convenience, we keep our most popular products in stock. However, keeping our stock intentionally low means that we have the ability to source and store an entirely different veneer for you, should your project require it. With us, the sky's the limit!
